New surveys undertaken by Environet during March have revealed earlier than expected growth of Japanese Knotweed. Characterised by asparagus like shoots with red/green leaves which grow several cm per day, the plant will reach a staggering 3m tall by the end of July. Is this further evidence of climate change or simply a result of other seasonal factors?
HM Treasury have published the Budget for 2008 today, with one entire chapter devoted to "An Environmentally Sustainable World." Following previous consultation it is confirmed that Landfill Tax for waste arising from contaminated land will not be exempt from 2012, with the derived revenue being used to extend land remediation relief. In the context of Japanese Knotweed, off-site disposal will become even more expensive in comparison to on-site treatment options.
HM Treasury have published their consultation response. The key points relating to Japanese knotweed are that the government intends to extend relief to Japanese knotweed treatment, excluding for landfill disposal, and to phase out landfill tax exemption. Cost of landfill disposal will therefore continue to rise, whilst relief will become available for the more environmentally acceptable treatment methods.
